Summertime is when most campers hit the road to their favorite destinations, but the heat can be a difficult thing to beat if you don’t know the right tricks to stay cool. As a full-time RVer, I have learned a lot of the dos and don’ts of summer camping first-hand. Here are my four favorite RV tips for staying cool in the heat.
1. Pick a Spot in the Shade
Campgrounds are getting pretty crowded with the boom of the RV industry, so it can be hard to get a shaded site if you aren’t booking well in advance. However, it never hurts to ask. You’ll want to get a site that is shaded from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM ideally.
2. Use Your Awning
Whether you get a shaded site or not, position your RV so that your awning will offer shade to an entire side of your RV during the peak times of the day. We put out our awning every morning and close it every night because it helps keep us cool so well.
3. Clean Your AC Filters
Your AC unit is going to be working overtime during the summer, so take good care of it! If you’re traveling for a week, clean it before you leave and after you get home. If you’re planning an extended stay, try to clean the filters every 2-3 weeks to keep them running at full capacity.
4. Use Your Shades
So, I live for natural light. The large, panoramic windows in our fifth wheel are one of the main reasons we picked it over other models. However, during the heat of summer, you need to close up those windows and use your shades during the hottest parts of the day. Our little boy still needs a naptime, so we usually pull all the shades and enjoy a little downtime ourselves from 1-3 while he sleeps. This has significantly helped our AC keep up on the hottest days.
